Our research brings a public health lens to community safety, and housing, economic, and climate justice.

Our research products equip community organizers and social justice movements with tools to shift narrative, build community power, and create transformational policy change for health equity and justice. We examine and document the root causes of health inequities and elevate equitable policies using a mixed methods approach, including data analysis, focus groups, interviews and health literature reviews.

HIP’s research is conducted in partnership with community organizing groups and advisors to support social justice movements and campaigns. To learn more about our approach to responsible, equitable, and community-centered research, explore the HIP Research Code of Ethics, developed with guidance from community organizers.

We believe just public health research:

  • Is collaborative and conducted in close communication with community partners
  • Should be beneficial to communities and support policy change to improve living conditions
  • Uplifts and reflects people’s lived realities
  • Ensures research participants and their stories are respected
  • Offers acknowledgement and compensation to participants
  • Empowers participants to end participation anytime if they feel uncomfortable
  • Encompasses follow-up beyond project completion

"The approach that HIP has taken in this Research Code of Ethics is really trailblazing…it really is counter to the experiences that we've had before about being researched subjects."
