Leadership Institute

A transformative learning community for public health practitioners

Join Our Mailing List

HIP’s Health Equity Awakened Leadership Institute is a transformative learning community for governmental public health practitioners to develop individual, institutional, and structural approaches to advance health equity, racial justice, and power-sharing.

The Institute applies a peer learning model, co-facilitated by dynamic staff, mentors, and faculty who are established leaders in public health, leadership development, racial justice, and community organizing.

Fellows convene up to 3 times a year for in-person training and retreats and participate in monthly virtual sessions. Since launching the Leadership Institute in 2014, we’ve graduated 70+ Fellows across 5 cohorts, and supported Fellows from 50 health departments across 20 states. Alumni have influenced practices, policies, and systems to shift how they work internally, across government, and with communities.

  • Developing a shared analysis around racial justice, health equity, and power

“My experience working with HIP as a 2022 Health Equity Awakened Leadership Fellow and capacity-building partner has been transformative. It is a gift to be in community with leaders transforming public health practice who hold change so strategically and lovingly. Through our capacity building partnership, we cultivated a new way for people in my health department to show up and build relationships and power with front-line community organizers.”
